Skanda is a famous protector deity in Buddhism, the leader of the thirty-two generals under the Southern Heavenly King. Depicted as a handsome warrior in armor holding a Vajra staff, he vows to protect the Dharma and monks. He is often found behind Maitreya Buddha in the Hall of Heavenly Kings, facing the Main Hall. Legend says the position of his staff indicates if the temple accepts traveling monks for lodging.

As a protector deity rather than a primary object of worship, Skanda receives devotion as part of the broader temple rituals. Monks and nuns pay respects to Skanda daily as part of the morning and evening liturgy, acknowledging his role in guarding the Dharma. Devotees may specifically pray to Skanda for protection during travel and for the safety of Buddhist monasteries. His statue is always placed behind the Maitreya Buddha, facing the Main Hall — legend says the position of his staff indicates whether the temple accepts traveling monks for lodging (staff pointing up means welcome, down means no vacancies).
Skanda's commemoration day is the 3rd day of the 6th lunar month. While not as widely celebrated as major Buddhist holidays, monasteries hold special ceremonies honoring all Dharma protectors on this day. The ceremony typically includes sutra chanting, offerings, and a procession around the monastery grounds. Skanda is also prominently featured during the "Thousand Buddha Repentance" (Qian Fo Chan) ceremony, a grand Buddhist ritual held at major temples, where his role as the ultimate protector of Buddhism is emphasized.
