Sangharama Bodhisattva

Guan Yu | Lord Guan | Sangharama

Introduction

Sangharama originally meant a Buddhist monastery, but later referred to its guardian spirits. In Chinese Buddhism, the most famous Sangharama Bodhisattva is the Three Kingdoms general Guan Yu. Admired for his loyalty and righteousness, he was adopted as a Buddhist protector after death. Together with Skanda, they are the two main guardians of Buddhist temples. He is depicted with a long beard, green robes, and his Green Dragon Crescent Blade.

Legend & Origin

Legend says Master Zhiyi of the Tiantai sect met Guan Yu's spirit while meditating on Mount Yuquan. Guan Yu, impressed by the Master's virtue, offered the mountain as a monastery and vowed to protect the Dharma. Master Zhiyi then requested creating Guan Yu as the Sangharama Guardian, cementing his role in Buddhism.

Worship Guide

Sangharama Bodhisattva (Guan Yu) holds a unique dual identity in Taiwan — worshipped as a Buddhist protector in monasteries and as a Taoist deity (Lord Guan) in folk temples. In Buddhist settings, devotees pay respects to his statue in the Sangharama Hall, praying for protection of the temple and its community. Offerings are similar to those for other Buddhist deities. In folk religion, Guan Yu is worshipped as the God of Loyalty and Righteousness, and many businesses and police stations display his image. His long beard and Green Dragon Crescent Blade are among the most recognizable deity images in Chinese culture.

Festivals

Guan Yu's birthday on the 24th day of the 6th lunar month is celebrated in both Buddhist monasteries and folk temples across Taiwan. In Buddhist settings, monks hold Dharma assemblies honoring his vow to protect Buddhism. In folk religion, the celebration is much grander — major temples like Xingtian Temple in Taipei see enormous crowds, with elaborate processions and theatrical performances reenacting the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms." Xingtian Temple's celebration is one of the largest in Taiwan, reflecting Guan Yu's extraordinary popularity as a deity who transcends religious boundaries.
