About
The "five years" in Wunian Qiansui is not the god's age. It is the interval between ceremonies: the presiding Thousand-Year Lord returns only once each cycle. Yuli Wunian Qiansui Temple enshrines the Wunian Qiansui, part of the wider Wangye tradition, and has served as a centre of worship in Yuli since the Qing dynasty. The founding temple of this lineage is Zhen'an Temple in Mingshan, Baozhong, Yunlin; the belief travelled east with migrants into the East Rift Valley. The temple stands on Zhongshan Road and is one of the few Wangye temples along the valley, worth a stop if you are passing through Yuli.
History
Yuli Wunian Qiansui Temple was founded in the Qing dynasty by Han settlers opening land in the East Rift Valley. The Wunian Qiansui, also known as the Twelve Plague Lords, are one branch of Wangye belief, centred on Mingshan in Baozhong, Yunlin. The name comes from the ceremonial cycle: nominally five years, in practice every four, because the count includes both the first and last year. The tradition moved east with settlers from western Taiwan, and this temple is a footnote to the valley's settlement history. Where people went, the gods were carried after them.
