About

Hualien City God Temple is one of the oldest temples in Hualien, dedicated to the City God. It famously survived the Japanese colonial 'Kominka' movement (which destroyed many temples) by cleverly enshrining Koxinga (who had Japanese heritage) and disguising the City God. The architecture is a unique blend of traditional Minnan style and Japanese elements, especially the theater stage opposite the temple. It's a vibrant cultural hub famous for local food.

History

Established in 1934 as Sheng'an Palace. Renamed 'Zheng Sheng Shrine' honoring Koxinga during the late Japanese period to avoid demolition. Restored to City God worship after WWII and rebuilt in 2004.
