Jade Emperor (Yu Huang Da Di)

Jade Emperor | Heavenly Grandfather | Lord of Heaven

Introduction

The Jade Emperor, affectionately called 'Tian Gong' (Heavenly Grandfather), is the supreme deity in Taoism, ruling the three realms of heaven, earth, and water. All gods, spirits, and beings fall under his jurisdiction.

As the cosmic sovereign, he governs the movements of heaven and earth, the seasons, weather, and reviews the moral conduct of all beings. At year's end, all gods report to him — the origin of Taiwan's 'Sending Off the Gods' ceremony.

His birthday on the 9th of the 1st lunar month is one of Taiwan's most solemn religious events. Families begin worship at midnight with elaborate offerings, following the highest ritual protocol including three kneeling bows with nine kowtows.

A common Taiwanese saying, 'Heavenly Grandfather loves good people,' reflects the folk belief in his impartial justice.

Legend & Origin

According to Taoist scriptures, the Jade Emperor was originally a prince named Zhang Youren from the 'Kingdom of Majestic Heavenly Light.' After governing wisely, he abdicated to cultivate the Tao in mountain seclusion.

He endured 1,750 cosmic kalpas, each lasting 129,600 years, before achieving golden immortality. After another hundred million kalpas, he attained the supreme position of Jade Emperor.

Folk tradition holds that in primordial chaos, when demons roamed freely, a supremely cultivated immortal led the heavenly soldiers to establish cosmic order. The grateful gods unanimously elected him ruler of the three realms.

On the 25th of the 12th lunar month, the Jade Emperor descends to inspect human conduct — a tradition that reinforces social morality: 'Heaven is watching.'

Worship Guide

Worshipping the Jade Emperor follows the highest ritual protocol. An outdoor altar faces the sky with two tiers: the upper for the Jade Emperor with flowers, tea, fruits, and vegetarian dishes; the lower for his retinue with five sacrifices. Sugarcane stalks tied with red thread symbolize 'rising higher.' Worship begins at midnight on the 9th of the 1st lunar month with three kneeling bows and nine kowtows.

Festivals

The Jade Emperor's birthday on the 9th of the 1st lunar month is one of Taiwan's most important religious holidays. Tainan Tiantan Temple hosts the grandest celebration, with firecrackers and lights through the night.
