God of medicine, healing, health protection

Baosheng Dadi (Great Emperor of Life Protection)

Great Emperor Baosheng | Divine Doctor Wu

Introduction

Baosheng Dadi is Taiwan's most important god of medicine. Originally named Wu Tao, he was a renowned physician in Song Dynasty Fujian. His exceptional medical skills saved countless lives, and after death he was deified as the God of Medicine.

His worship is centered on healing and health. Modern medical professionals and pharmacists also worship him as their patron saint. Some temples offer 'medicine slips' — traditional herbal prescriptions drawn by lot.

The most representative temple is Taipei's Dalongdong Baoan Temple, a national monument that won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for its exquisite restoration.

A delightful folk tale suggests Baosheng Dadi and Mazu were once lovers. When their birthdays approach in the 3rd lunar month, he summons wind and she summons rain in their eternal lovers' quarrel — explaining Taiwan's notoriously changeable March weather.

Legend & Origin

Baosheng Dadi was born Wu Tao in 979 AD in Fujian's Tongai County. From youth, he studied medicine extensively, specializing in epidemic treatment. He treated all patients regardless of wealth and often purchased medicine for the poor at his own expense.

His most famous exploit was treating the Song Emperor Renzong's mother. After her recovery, the emperor offered him a position as Imperial Physician, but Wu Tao declined, preferring to continue serving common people.

Another beloved legend tells of him treating a tiger with a bone stuck in its throat. Despite the danger, he reached into the tiger's mouth to remove the bone. The grateful tiger became his mount — which is why tiger statues often accompany Baosheng Dadi images.

In 1036 AD, Wu Tao fell from a cliff while gathering herbs at age 58. Villagers built a temple in his honor, and his worship spread to Taiwan with Hokkien immigrants.

Worship Guide

Offerings are simple and clean: flowers, vegetarian fruits, and tea. Some temples offer 'medicine slips' for traditional remedies, though modern temples advise consulting doctors as well. His birthday festival at Baoan Temple combines religion, arts, and community events.

Festivals

His birthday on the 15th of the 3rd lunar month kicks off the three-month 'Baosheng Cultural Festival' at Baoan Temple, one of Taiwan's largest temple cultural events, featuring traditional opera, fire-walking rituals, and art exhibitions.
