Legend & Origin
Baosheng Dadi was born Wu Tao in 979 AD in Fujian's Tongai County. From youth, he studied medicine extensively, specializing in epidemic treatment. He treated all patients regardless of wealth and often purchased medicine for the poor at his own expense.
His most famous exploit was treating the Song Emperor Renzong's mother. After her recovery, the emperor offered him a position as Imperial Physician, but Wu Tao declined, preferring to continue serving common people.
Another beloved legend tells of him treating a tiger with a bone stuck in its throat. Despite the danger, he reached into the tiger's mouth to remove the bone. The grateful tiger became his mount — which is why tiger statues often accompany Baosheng Dadi images.
In 1036 AD, Wu Tao fell from a cliff while gathering herbs at age 58. Villagers built a temple in his honor, and his worship spread to Taiwan with Hokkien immigrants.
