Detailed Introduction
The First Incense Race is Taiwan's most exciting temple New Year tradition. At the stroke of midnight on Lunar New Year's Eve, temple doors swing open and devotees rush to be the first to plant their incense stick in the main censer.
Belief holds that the 'first incense guest' receives special blessings and good fortune for the entire year. Famous temples for this tradition include Taipei Longshan Temple, Dajia Jenn Lann Temple, and Beigang Chaotian Temple.
In recent years, some temples have adopted numbered tickets or divination block draws instead of physical rushing, balancing tradition with safety.
