About

Taitung Tianhou Temple is the oldest Mazu temple in Taitung and the only official Qing dynasty temple in Eastern Taiwan. It is famous for the 'Bombing of Master Handan' ceremony during the Lantern Festival, one of Taiwan's top three folklore events alongside the Pingxi Sky Lanterns and Yanshui Beehive Fireworks. The event features brave volunteers representing Master Handan being bombarded with firecrackers, symbolizing prosperity and driving away the cold.

History

Founded in 1889 by Admiral Zhang Zhaolian to thank Mazu for helping quell a rebellion. Received a plaque from Emperor Guangxu. Moved to the current site in 1933 after an earthquake. It stands as a witness to the history of Taitung's development.
