About

Tafalong is one of the oldest and largest Amis (Pangcah) settlements in Hualien County, with a history spanning over 1,500 years. The ancestral shrine (kakita'an) at its heart is the sacred center of Tafalong's spiritual and cultural life, housing ceremonial instruments and ancestral symbols passed down through generations. The shrine's pillars feature exquisite wood carvings depicting Amis creation myths — a precious indigenous art heritage. The annual Harvest Festival (Ilisin) in July-August is the grandest celebration, where the entire tribe gathers for singing, dancing, and ancestral worship, thanking the kawas (ancestral spirits) and nature for their blessings. The festival's dances, feasts, and age-grade system showcase the essence of Amis social structure and culture.

History

Tafalong's history spans over 1,500 years, making it one of the earliest large Amis settlements in the East Rift Valley. The name 'Tafalong' means 'white crab' in Amis, after the white crabs once abundant in local streams. The ancestral shrine (kakita'an) preserves the most ancient Amis traditions. Japanese ethnographers conducted detailed studies here during the colonial era. In recent years, the tribe has actively pursued cultural revitalization — restoring the shrine, transmitting traditional songs and crafts, and developing cultural tourism, serving as a model for indigenous cultural preservation in Taiwan.
