About

Shanbian Mazu is unique for having 'No Temple' for decades, traditionally housed in the home of a chosen representative (Leader of the Incense) each year. A temporary temple was built in 2013. Shanbian Mazu shares a deep sisterly bond with Baishatun Mazu, and for over a century, they have shared the same palanquin during the pilgrimage to Beigang.

History

The exact origin is unknown, but Shanbian Mazu is estimated to have been in Taiwan for over 300 years. For generations, a 'Rotating Incense Leader' system was used: each year, a divinely chosen household hosted the deity. Since 1953, Shanbian Mazu has shared a palanquin with Baishatun Mazu for the annual walking pilgrimage to Beigang — a tradition unbroken for over 70 years. A temporary temple was built in 2013, ending the rotating worship tradition.
