About
Penghu Tianhou Temple is the oldest temple in Taiwan, confirmed by historical records to predate 1604. It houses the 'Shen Yourong Repelled the Dutch' stone tablet — the oldest tablet in Taiwan-Penghu, recording the 1604 event where Ming Dynasty commander Shen Yourong expelled the Dutch. This tablet was designated a National Treasure in 2022. The temple has been a national monument since 1983 and preserves abundant Qing Dynasty carvings and paintings.
History
The exact founding date is unknown, but in 1604, Dutch East India Company commander Wijbrand van Waerwijck arrived in Penghu with two ships. Ming Dynasty commander Shen Yourong successfully expelled them. The famous stone tablet commemorating this event was unearthed during renovations in 1919, establishing the temple's status as the oldest in Taiwan-Penghu. The temple has undergone multiple renovations through the Ming and Qing dynasties.
