About

Hsinchu Sanshan Guowang Temple, built during the Qianlong era, is the most representative Hakka religious center in Hsinchu City. The Three Mountain Kings — patron gods from Jieyang, Chaozhou, Guangdong — are among the most important guardian deities brought by Hakka immigrants to Taiwan. The temple preserves Qing Dynasty plaques and stone carvings that witness Hakka settlers' history in the Hsinchu region.

History

Founded in 1780 by Hakka immigrants from Guangdong. During the Qing era, when ethnic conflicts between Hokkien and Hakka communities were common, this temple served not just as a religious site but as a rallying point for Hakka solidarity. It has been renovated multiple times while preserving its Qing Dynasty architectural framework. It narrowly escaped demolition during the Japanese colonial period.
