Legend & Origin
Manjushri holds an exalted position in Buddhist scripture. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, he is the teacher who inspires the youth Sudhana to embark on his legendary pilgrimage to fifty-three teachers in search of ultimate truth. In the Vimalakirti Sutra, when none of the great bodhisattvas dared visit the formidable layman Vimalakirti, Manjushri alone accepted the invitation, engaging in a brilliant exchange on the nature of non-duality that remains one of Buddhism's most celebrated dialogues. Although Manjushri appears as a bodhisattva, the scriptures reveal that he has long since attained Buddhahood — in a past life as the 'Dragon-Seed Noble King Buddha' and in a future age as the 'Universal-Seeing Tathagata' — choosing to manifest as a bodhisattva to guide beings toward awakening. Mount Wutai in China is regarded as his sacred abode, drawing pilgrims from across the Buddhist world for centuries.
