Manjushri Bodhisattva

Manjusri | Bodhisattva of Wondrous Virtue | Bodhisattva of Auspicious Glory | Prajnaparamita Manjushri

Introduction

Manjushri is the Bodhisattva of Supreme Wisdom in Buddhism, serving alongside Samantabhadra as one of the two attendants of Shakyamuni Buddha — together they form the 'Three Sages of the Avatamsaka.' Manjushri's iconic attributes are a flaming sword in his right hand (cutting through ignorance), a Prajnaparamita sutra in his left (the perfection of wisdom), and a blue lion as his mount (representing the fierce, untameable power of wisdom). In Taiwan, Manjushri is particularly beloved by students and exam-takers, and temples that enshrine him see a surge of visitors before major examinations, as the faithful pray for clarity of mind and academic success.

Legend & Origin

Manjushri holds an exalted position in Buddhist scripture. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, he is the teacher who inspires the youth Sudhana to embark on his legendary pilgrimage to fifty-three teachers in search of ultimate truth. In the Vimalakirti Sutra, when none of the great bodhisattvas dared visit the formidable layman Vimalakirti, Manjushri alone accepted the invitation, engaging in a brilliant exchange on the nature of non-duality that remains one of Buddhism's most celebrated dialogues. Although Manjushri appears as a bodhisattva, the scriptures reveal that he has long since attained Buddhahood — in a past life as the 'Dragon-Seed Noble King Buddha' and in a future age as the 'Universal-Seeing Tathagata' — choosing to manifest as a bodhisattva to guide beings toward awakening. Mount Wutai in China is regarded as his sacred abode, drawing pilgrims from across the Buddhist world for centuries.

Worship Guide

Offerings to Manjushri include flowers, fruit, and — uniquely — stationery such as pens and books, symbolizing scholarly pursuits. It is common for exam-takers to bring their admission tickets or writing instruments to the altar for a blessing, praying for Manjushri to grant them clarity and insight. Devoted practitioners chant the Manjushri Heart Mantra ('Om A Ra Pa Ca Na Dhih') or recite the Manjushri Prajnaparamita Sutra as part of their daily practice.

Festivals

Manjushri Bodhisattva's birthday is celebrated on the 4th day of the 4th lunar month. Major Buddhist temples hold wisdom-themed Dharma assemblies and blessing ceremonies. Many temples near schools also organize 'Wisdom Lamp' services around exam season, allowing students to light lamps before Manjushri's image as they pray for academic success.
