Detailed Introduction
The Baishatun Mazu Pilgrimage is Taiwan's most legendary Mazu procession, organized by Gongtian Temple in Baishatun, Miaoli, heading to Chaotian Temple in Beigang, Yunlin — a round trip of about 400 km over 8-9 days.
**Unique Route**: Unlike all other pilgrimages, the route is completely unplanned. The pink-covered palanquin (nicknamed the 'Pink Supercar') moves entirely on divine guidance — sometimes sprinting, making sharp turns, or even reversing. It frequently 'charges' into homes, schools, and hospitals to bless residents.
**Sister Mazu**: Since 1953, Shanbian Mazu from nearby Houlong has shared the same palanquin, creating a 70+ year unbroken tradition of 'Sister Mazus' — one of the most touching stories in Taiwan's pilgrimage culture.
**Roadside Hospitality**: Locals along the route voluntarily set up stations offering free meals, drinks, and rest areas. This outpouring of generosity, regardless of acquaintance, is often described as 'Taiwan's most beautiful scenery.'
**How to Join**: Anyone can join freely — no registration or fees required. Walk the entire route or just sections. GPS tracking of the palanquin is available online. Designated a National Important Folk Custom in 2010.
