A Tudigong statue 109 feet tall stands on the hilltop, gazing down over all of Zhonghe — this is Hongludi Nanshan Fude Temple, one of the most famous places in northern Taiwan to pray for wealth, and the most striking landmark in New Taipei's Zhonghe District. The tallest Earth God statue in Taiwan, kindly-faced, holds a gold ingot steady in its hands. The temple sits atop Nanshijiao Mountain with a sweeping view, so a visit takes in the whole panorama of Greater Taipei by night. Open 24 hours, it grows livelier the later it gets — many salespeople and business owners make a habit of climbing up after dark to exchange 'Money Mother' coins and stroke the ingots, praying for their fortunes to flourish.
History
During the Qianlong reign (around the 1770s), Zhangzhou immigrants brought a divided incense of Tudigong from the Erxuan Temple in Nanjing, Fujian; at first it was only a simple straw altar, rebuilt in stone in the Jiaqing era. The name 'Honglu-di' — 'brazier ground' — is no accident: the terrain here resembles a fire brazier in feng shui, and though the elevation is modest the view is superb, earning a feng shui master's praise as a rare 'wealth-gathering point.' That is exactly why Hongludi Nanshan Fude Temple became the most famous 'wealth-seeking' Earth God temple in Taiwan. At year's end and the new year, and on the Earth God's birthday on the 2nd day of the 2nd lunar month, the stream of pilgrims and cars up the mountain never ends. The kindly Tudigong statue on the summit, ingot in hand, has long been a landmark of Zhonghe; and after dark, the glittering lights of the Taipei Basin below have made this a celebrated spot for night views as well.
